The original was way more complex. Now smells like cinnamon oil in alcohol and is probably not much more than that, possibly totally outsourced and unconnected to the house or entirely fake, either cashing in on a legacy. The review from ariel.cardona bears out that there are multiple versions from multiple sources floating around. https://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Halston/Halston-Z14-3697.html?ccid=2512538#focus-zone

Nose Note #634 Smells like a mix of Aramis Aramis and Drakkar Noir, or a watered down version of Aramis, or a spiced up leathery version of Drakkar. A perfect image of what mens old school smells like. Very green, very aromatic and very leathery. 7.8/10, perhaps easier to wear and more interesting than Aramis and Drakkar

An interesting opening — like taking Witness and dragging it to a completely different side. It’s the side of some singular, original herb; I can’t quite pin down this odd, almost impish greenness. As if that old-school masculine statement had been infused with bamboo or something exotic, tropical even. It also reminds me of a specific scent, maybe carrying a playful vibe like Sung Homme, but probably something else… something purple… But this impression fades quickly, leaving something dry, and something closer to a bouquet of spices. It’s not exactly the Flannel profile, but it’s another kind of take. A well-crafted bouquet, a bit daring, maybe leaning toward Agua Brava

This is sweet hot cinnamon. A hot Indian Chai or some Yemenite tea with a spoonful of cinnamon. 💕 Lovely sexless oriental splash. I think this one calls for "Sexless" rather than "Unisex" for this one. It's a dreamy clean insense stick that hasn't been lit yet. Let it comfort you after a hot shower in January or before bed. Put a stamp on your shoulder and chin or pour some on the sofa before guests are coming. I just enjoy sniffing this oriental dream without using it as a fragrance on my skin. Unique. 🤎

My bottle is nearing 40 years old but it was already reformulated and on a drugstore shelf by then. It's a super dose of cinnamon. Woody, dusty, leathery cinnamon. Was fairly sweet for It's time. I preferred Chaps over this. This bottle has survived by not being what I like and it hides very well. I never associated this with polo. The cinnamon sweetness makes this very different from polo.

Purchased June 2017 -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Z-14 preceding Polo makes Polo a Z-14 EDP Concentrée, or Intense, or Black Extreme. Or if you like it the other way, Z-14 is a Polo Light/Fraiche. And it's better than Polo Sport, it's basically Polo Sport before Polo Sport. Get rid of your boring deo-style Polo Sport and spray on Z-14 when you feel like smelling the other. Polo had to have been influenced or inspired by Z-14.

One of those 18 Euro blind buys that is another disappointment. It opens with a cheap sauer lemon that disappears in 15 minutes. There is a prominent dry cinnamon smell with herbal notes. Very old school masculine but it's not good. In the dry down this once classic Halston drops flat on its nose. What a disastrous base. Chemical and rather dirty flat leathery. Revlon re released this one only for the memories of older gents and classic frag loving fragheads like me. The bottle is a strange almost ridiculous design but worthwhile to keep in the collection as a sign of respect for what this once was in it's haydays. If you like a real good one in this genre check out Puig Aqua Brava and Quorum. They cost the same but are much better quality wise if you like classic masculine fougere style pine spice aromatic colognes.

Disappointing honestly. I am a huge vintage men's fragrance fan and given how widely exhalted Z-14 seems to be, I had high hopes. I tracked down what I believe to be an early 2000's sealed bottle and having now spent the day smelling it off my skin, I am not overly impressed...ultimately to me, there is nothing that really stands out about it. There are so many other classic and modern fragrances that I would reach for over this one. Good thing it was cheap...

It's quite an odd creation to me, because I get such a particular image in my head when I smell this. Strangely enough, it smells like a hotel lobby in a warm holiday location. It's hard to explain, but if you know what I mean, you'll definitely relate. I don't love the fragrance, but I don't hate it either. It's interesting, and I'm glad I bought it. This fragrance was so incredibly cheap that I wouldn't be sad even if it were horrid — can recommend it for someone into old-school scents.

Recent purchase, new release. Despite the sequence of notes, cinnamon enters from the start with other top notes, and then after 15 minutes, as some of you guys noticed, it is uncannily similar to Eau Savage and this lasts for an hour or so. Z-14 is fresh, it really is. Cinnamon is not prominent. Although it is mossy, woody and leathery in the drydown, it still retains a bit of its freshness. It is quite tame throughout its life, losing sillage after three hours, staying skinscent for six hours. In the air it is absolutely delicious and general impression is NOT oldtimely. I will be wearing. 8/10

Me and Halston, we are confidents, he knows my secrets, forgotten memories. This is a sad fragrance who whisper: It's ok,move on. Real life, the fantasy is over, grow up. Remember to wear Halston when you take a revenge against your foes, celebrate a Vendetta, meet in the forest your fraters from the secret organization you are a member, or go outside at night for cry In the rain. Halston also, have an ultra elegant verve, low light inside a chic hotel room,a desk made of black woods, dark wood furniture. Scent for a pirate,a plutonian,an outsider. Halston is sigma male. This is not a perfume, is something else. Halston is silence, seriousness, superiority, Halston is about power, serious power. Vladimir Putin's sweat is Z-14. Acidic lemon, organic moist soil, herbal cypress, leather, bitter and dry. You will not forget this when you smell alone in meditative state. If Halston was a poem it would be: Defeat from Khalil Gibran. But Halston never looses,he calculated the moves, have strategical thought, a weird charisma and never give up. In the end of everything, after all this rock and roll, Halston also smell like Christmas In North America, those Americans and Canadians houses, with their pine trees and nice meals, they know how to celebrate beautifully. I could go further, but some words should be kept as a secret regarding the meaning of Halston Z-14 ingredients. Halston, listen, we will attack them at night under heavy storm, they will never know who we are or where we come from.

A timeless classic that still stands out as an uber masculine leather fragrance that exudes confidence. It opens with a citrus punch, but the musk and leather and cedar quickly make their statement. It's not sweet like so many modern fragrances, but has instead a dark earthy mossy organic smell. When I was young, my dad used to tease me telling me to stop putting cream and sugar in my coffee because grown ups drink their coffee black. I'm reminded of his mindset when I smell Z14, and I suspect this scent will appeal more to mature men than young guys. Longevity and projection are very solid and it's a real bargain these days. I bought a bottle in 2024 and it smells very much like I remember the original. Still well worth having in your collection today and nothing else I've come across smells like it.

BTW, true story: when I recently bought the Z-14, there were two left on the shelf. The boxes were slightly different, but I could tell they were both recent batches. I tested them both. . . and they smelled very, VERY different. The cashier tested them with me and right from the start we could pick one smelled strong and amazing (a 2023 batch for those asking) while the other one was. . . very weak. Like I wrote before, I've never had the vintage one; but my bottle is probably way closer to the old stuff than the other one.

Beware of the people crapping on this one (or many other perfumes) because of reformulations. I've never sniffed the vintage bottle. This current formulation (the one I own) is from 2023 and it's kind of a curious case. Sometimes I get a lemon starting scent and other times I get the cinnamon scent. And other times, I can smell BOTH scents from the start. In any case it's a wonderful scent that, IMO, is more versatile than many people think. We can easily tell that it's an old school perfume; but it's not far from the modern tendencies. And for being an EDC, on my skin, it last a long time. Totally recommended.

I purchased my bottle of Z14 through a discounter about a year ago. This was my first wear. I found it interesting that Tom Ford's discontinued Italian Cypress is suggested as similar. Side story - I already sampled Alexandria Fragrances' Italian Forest which is a dupe of Italian Cypress. (I've never smelled Italian Cypress.) I liked the dupe a lot and was planning on buying a bottle, but am glad I haven't yet. IMO Z14 is the superior fragrance. What I specifically liked about Z14 is the very strong citrusy opening along with the cypress. These two notes hang on for quite some time, with the citrus especially adding a very fresh feel to the fragrance. It's a lot brighter and fresher than Italian Forest. In the far dry down - after about 4 hours - Z14 and Italian Forest are about 95% identical. Although Z14 is fresher, it's strong enough to be used anytime of the year, even in cold weather. I think it will really shine in summer though. Z14's longevity is very good. I got about 10 hours out of it and it was still a good skin scent at that time. Sillage is more moderate after the first half hour. You won't fumigate a room with Z14. Regarding the cinnamon note. I've read reviews at different perfume sites and seen some YouTube videos. From what I gather, the original Z14 did not have a strong cinnamon note. AF's Italian Forest does not have that either. Apparently, there was a reformulation of Z14 at some point which added strong cinnamon but then a more recent batch has removed the strong cinnamon and brought it back to be more like its original scent. I must have the most recent batch because I do not pick up strong cinnamon at all. In fact, I hardly detect any cinnamon. I really like Z14 now and will not be getting that bottle of Italian Forest. It's also a bargain - $19.00 at discounters for 125ml.

I've always loved Z-14 and to be completely honest, I don't think that it's suffered nearly as much as other classic fragrances because of reformulation. It still lasts at least 8 hours and truly is a Masterpiece of perfumery. Of course it's different from almost everything currently available, but to me, that's the allure. For $25, why not take the chance?

Should I buy a bottle of Italian Cypress to upgrade my Dad's cologne instead of buying him a bottle of this every Christmas, since they apparently "neutered" it? Nah, save my money and get him his $15 cologne from 1974. At 78 the man is not changing now and apparently his only cologne he's ever worn is a gem. He's worn this since 1974 and I can attest that he smells the same as he always has so the silage is no different than the 1980's rendition.

• Disappointing • Reviewing vintage/pre-IFRA bottle from early 2000s, straight out of sealed package... • I get 60% cinnamon, 20% mint, 20% dried basil. Reminds me slightly of current Giorgio Red. • People are saying newer version added even MORE cinnamon??? Is that possible? • It smells like it could be an interesting layering tool, but not a complete fragrance by itself

My new bottle of Z14 has a woodsy green opening. Quite brief to say the least. That's followed by the same synthetic oakmoss which is used in a lot of cheapies nowadays. No cinnamon in here, anymore. Skin scent within an hour too. Disappointing. Maybe the next reformulation will improve things but Halston seems to be scraping the bottom of the barrel for ingredients.

I found a 'vintage'-ish bottle on eBay by purchasing the Jeff Gordon version which is early 2000's and before massive re-formulation. It set me back about $25 for 1oz. As many have said, this indeed scratches the itch of an old-school cologne that you remember from back in the day. I wasn't blown away by it, but it is definitely different from everything else (40+ bottles) that I have. I do not like strong cinnamon or mint, and thankfully this does not feature that note, but on the shelf versions apparently do. This is laid back, classic, masculine but not sharp, and evokes memories of my older brother or dad going out with their friends. If you can find a vintage bottle and are interested in this kind of feel, go on eBay. While I didn't buy a new bottle, the descriptions here of what's on the shelf do not match the old bottle I have.

(Gatekeepers gonna HATE what I'm about to do...) My first experience with this scent profile was a decant of TF's Italian Cypress, which I adore. But I didn't really care to drop several hundred bucks on tracking down a discontinued bottle, so I did some research and found that vintage Halston Z14 is probably what inspired TF IC. $40 on eBay got me a mostly-full bottle of Z14 with a French Fragrances sticker on the bottom (scroll down to DawnyAllah's comment from 2/18/2022 for more info on reformulations), and for me, this bottle has been a wonderful find. I find the FF version of Halston Z14 to be verrryyyyy close to TF IC. There are many incredible discontinued frags out there for which a stand-in just won't cut it; but Halston Z14 predates TF IC by decades and largely replicates the joyful experience of TF IC for me, even if it doesn't smell 100% the same. The major differences? IC is a stronger performer and goes all-in on the cypress, creating a rich, zingy experience. Z14, comparatively, is ever so slightly tamer and calibrated away from the cypress to make space for other notes. That space is filled by a subtle yet unmistakably "vintage" accord, which IC lacks. Maybe it's the oakmoss, plus a drop of benzoin/amber in the Z14. (I'm not sure what oakmoss alone smells like, and I probably never will). Altogether, vintage Z14 provides a commendable quality on-par with fragrances that'll put you back hundreds at Ulta or Sephora. As long as I've got Z14 on my shelf, I'm happy to forego my pursuit of TF IC in favor of experiencing other parts of the fragrance spectrum.

I really do wish that these companies would quit effing around with formulations... That, or I wish that one of the Arabic Houses would come up with a line of replicas that have some longevity. Back in the Eighties, I used this in my regular rotation of Cosmair POLO, Aramis, Monsieur Houbigant, Halston 1-12 and, believe it or not, Four Roses hair tonic. Every last one of those has either been reformulated beyond recognition, or discontinued altogether. I recently bought a 3.4 ounce bottle and although it seems "quality", the longevity certainly isn't there like it was back in the Eighties... But it's still a nice fragrance and I'm sure I'll get my $20 worth back.

If you like sweeter colognes, this is probably not for you - The cypress front of this cologne will wear you out. I am not a giant fan of sweet scents, and prefer the older school of vintage 70s-80s stuff. This fits right in. The cypress smell is strong for 2-3 hours then you are left with a more fresher herb, mint, & lemon dry smell that is quite nice. I would prefer if the cypress was toned down a bit when you spray it on. For the price ($10-$15 at Walmart) its a good value considering the strength of the cologne. It kind of reminds me of Old Spice but with much more strength, and more citrus. It is much better than Old Spice.

Isn't this a Fougere/chypre fragrance? If the main note is aromatic then it's Fougere even if it hasn't got lavender because it's got the other two notes and basil instead of lavender. And it's a chypre too because it's got 3 outta 4 notes. So it's a wood heavy Fougere/chypre fragrance. Not leather.

Can’t speak on previous iterations, but as it stands, Halston Z14 is a pleasant aromatic citrus. Oranges flanked by a lot of spices and herbs and a mossy base. The spice listed is cinnamon but I get more of a cinnamon-anise-clove feeling. Lots of that cypress and basil. This is well balanced and awesome value. Masculine and mature. 8.0/10

In search of a successful vintage Cologne I bought online a beautiful 240ml bottle Z 14 by Halston. Unfortunately this edition is not vintage in the sense that for the price it is recent and reformulated, certainly different from the original, I wanted to own this Cologne created in 1974 by Max Gavarry and Vincent Marcello for Roy Halston. I read that it has a huge sillage and longevity but in my case it lasts a little, no more than 2 hours, perhaps made lighter over the years, however very good and elegant, not to be used in the morning because it is too complex, more suitable after 12 am. Green and initially balsamic with notes of cypress, green notes, citrus, green vetiver takes over, a light patchouli, I admit that I do not perceive the cinnamon or the geranium and jasmine, little leather, little of the notes mentioned remains; tell me, am I wrong? It's a shame because it promises very well but ends soon, if compared to other perfumes of today it remains a true masterpiece.

Great fragrance even for today’s fragrance era. A timeless classic, that still smells very much like TF and even CC, but at a better budget. I still get great longevity and decent projection even with my reformulated version. Great fragrance and super masculine, unlike all the modern unisex fragrances in todays modern age.

LOOK for VINTAGE bottles that have an out-dated barcode at the bottom of the box. You'll know what I mean when you see it. This version is the "Studio 54 "version that are FIZZY and more nuanced than the recent bottles you can buy at T.J. Maxx and Marshalls. You're in for a real TREAT !

Epic Journey Into the Bottled Yonder, 056 - Purchased June 2017 I enjoy 1-12 more because it's more unique than Z-14, but I'd have to favour this over two other similar scents - Lacoste from '84 and Bowling Green, '86. The bottle itself is also an artistic rarity, when one cheekily looks at your collection they mistake you having two of the same bottle, wrong. You're not an enthusiast, and if you were you'd understand immediately one is 1-12 and the other is Z-14. The bottles are pure disco including the scents themselves. I used this more than Lacoste and Beene's Bowling Green. Easier to wear and waste. They make this one today but not the Lacoste bottle, so I kept that more as a 100 mL collectible that I wear a few times a year. Z-14 will get you further than Bowling Green. Have to say that one is my least favourite out of the three. Was an honest waste of money ending up with these three by accident but I enjoy discovering the similarities above considering nobody else had, except for me - the entire reminds of section does not have either.

Scent Profile: Opening: The fragrance opens with a bright, citrusy burst from bergamot and lemon, combined with a spicy herbal touch from artemisia, basil, and coriander. This initial freshness is complemented by a warm spiciness from cinnamon. Heart: As the fragrance evolves, it reveals a rich, aromatic heart with earthy patchouli, spicy clove, and crisp juniper berries. Jasmine adds a subtle floral nuance, balancing the heavier notes. Base: The base is where Halston Z-14 truly shines with its warm, deep, and leathery notes. Leather and amber create a robust, smoky, and resinous foundation, supported by earthy moss, cedarwood, and vetiver. Performance: Longevity: Halston Z-14 is generally noted for its good longevity, lasting around 6 to 8 hours or more, depending on skin type and application. Projection: It has moderate to strong projection, making it noticeable without being overpowering. It performs well in various settings, from office environments to evening wear. Overall Impression: Complexity: The fragrance is often praised for its complex and well-balanced composition. It manages to blend fresh, spicy, and woody elements harmoniously. Vintage Appeal: Halston Z-14 is appreciated for its vintage charm, evoking a sense of sophistication and confidence that reflects the style of its time. Versatility: While it is a bold and distinctive scent, it can be versatile enough for both day and evening wear. Its rich base notes make it particularly suited for cooler weather and evening events. Critiques: Nostalgia Factor: Some reviewers note that the scent might feel dated to modern noses, as it is very much a product of the 1970s fragrance trends. Heaviness: The leather and woody base can come across as quite heavy, which may not be to everyone's taste, especially those who prefer lighter or more contemporary scents. In summary, Halston Z-14 is a classic fragrance with a rich, complex scent profile that offers a nostalgic glimpse into 1970s perfumery. It is well-regarded for its longevity and distinctiveness, though its vintage character might appeal more to those who appreciate classic and bold fragrances.

If I had a dime for every time I read "IFRA" in a fragrance review where one pines for those classic fragrances (most often male-marketed ones) that have since become "shells of their former selves," I would be Scrooge McDuck. IFRA is not the enemy, it is the EU and their draconian regulations. For something still in production after all these years, Z-14 seems a bit worse for the wear, but it may not even be materials restrictions that have hollowed it out, but purely economics. The current version is a rather brittle citrus-cinnamon number, with none of that deliciously chewy, leathery-sweet labdanum and the fleshier oakmoss accord. Older formulations, until the 2010s, smell great, and there's surely been enough pontification online as to what versions are superior, what to buy, so on and so forth, and I just refuse to add to that dialogue. What I will say is this: these previous versions feel both burly and articulate, with a resinous evergreen cypress note propelled with spices and herbs, leading into stout woods and a luscious, sinewy chypre base. Relegated to the bottom shelves of drugstores and discount rack retailers in its current, feeble iteration, it was once a luxurious item, and it would behoove anyone who seeks to curate vintage masculine fragrances to seek out the vintages and enjoy.

I am not one of those men who can pick out every note in a fragrance. And although I can usually only pick out a couple of the more obvious notes from any fragrances, I am almost always very clear on an overall feeling. I cannot name for you the specific note that I am picking up from Z-14 but I can tell you that I can't get enough of it! Despite the list of ordinary notes noted above on this Fragrantica page there is something else that I am picking up that is totally unique and amazing! And the feeling of this fragrance? I can't define it, but I like it! At the very least, I can tell you that the fragrance feels completely masculine.

This smells like if someone came over and used your bathroom, took a dump and flushed it, then sprayed mesmerized by Avon in the toilet to mask the smell. This is definitely a fragrance for older men. It has a strong wood/ cinnamony/ lemony/ rootbeer mixed with those Christmas tree car air fresheners and after-shave smell mixed with the scent of a faded "someone took a dump and got done flushing it and walking in 10 minutes later" smell. the bad weird smell is very faint and the other smells are more dominant. I wouldn't say it's horrible because I smelled worse, but its more of an old grandpa cologne in my opinion.

I must admit that I have come to the conclusion on this one and for example Boucheron Pour Homme that they are modern bathroom scents, sorry, but it's just the way it is. And so I use them as such and spray them in the bathroom, on a towel or something for longevity I guess...

Halston Z-14 is a brawny timeless classic. It's lack of elegance is part of the attraction. Not fancy, powerful up-the-middle strategy without need for West Coast offense aerial theatrics. Solid, no frills - though there are some blue collar bells and whistles. Cinnamon strikes deep into enemy territory taking no prisoners. To my nose, HZ-14 has a lovely hint of gasoline; the result of this cologne on the street is simple unstopability. *** Now, let's study the naysayers: squeamish men come out with various angles of banter against this frag. Are any of this multitude truly accurate? No. Some feel a need to spend on pricey more girly smells and are unable to realize that what they really need is in Halston Z-14, to help them mature, put hair on their chests and to enrich, by aromatherapy, with ability to come up with the right things to say especially when under romantic pressure. Other naysayers are cultishly trend locked. They simply cannot reconcile to a long-term known winner because without riding the finicky breezes of fashion flux, they draw snide comments from the lost souls they turn to for advice. Finally, there are the men who have traded away their man-card to fit in effeminate circles. These are especially terrified of Z-14!! Even a slight whiff makes them run for the emergency exit. Leather, wood - strong, and a very pleasant mix of fresh with depth of lurking Mother Earth process. Forrest floor slow rot mixes with a touch of gasoline, touched lightly with lemon. Don't fear this smell lads, learn to support it with character, fearlessness and the courage to be a man in times where most men are afraid of themselves, afraid of their own inner power, afraid of the consequences of ending culturally enforced whimpdome.

This cologne does not smell like anything crazy, I bought it for 15 dollars at tj max! It smells like a pretty common cologne, kind of like something you would smell on an old black man at church. The longevity is not bad and is quite good for such a cheap fragrance, the sillage is also bomb and projects a little too much for my liking. The cologne would be great if it just smelled a little better, I think that the citrus opening does bring it back up a little. The bottle is cheap and quite ugly, but if you’re my great grandpa this is the cologne for you!! Longevity 7/10 Sillage 6/10 Scent 3/10 Bottle 1/10 Overall 4/10

Normally, I only purchase older bottles of Z-14 that still contain oak moss and tree moss. I've smelled the newer 'cinnamon bomb' formulation of the last 20 years or so and was never compelled to own it. However, we were in Marshall's today and there were two bottles on the shelf. The ingredient list on the box does not match my vintage bottles OR the cinnamon bomb releases. I sprayed it on my hand and was extremely surprised at how closely it matches the vintage scent. Gone is the chewing gum opening. It smells like Halston again... Iriomote commented previously about finding what sounds like the same version in early 2023. Does anyone know when this was reformulated yet again and if it's still being produced?

Green, herbal, soapy with just a hint of leather in the drydown. Beautiful fragrance reminiscent of green fragrances from the 70s and 80s. Moderate longevity which is par for the course as an EDC. Came to the party late on this one so just decided to try it out even though the only bottle available at the store was a 236ml (8.8oz) beast. The lack of performance means you have to reapply frequently, which is cumbersome with a bottle that size. Dirt cheap but decent fragrance for chilling or running errands in colder weather especially for those who want a change from the sweet fragrances that are all the rage now.

Not a fan. I have a pretty old bottle, most likely past “expiration”. I only smell cinnamon, and it’s a pretty harsh cinnamon. After awhile it goes away and becomes lighter… but it’s still just cinnamon. At least it because a little bit more enjoyable. I usually just layer it onto any gourmand that lacks that little boost. Hardly ever touch the bottle anymore.

To me, this fragrance smells like the most MANLY Christmas ever celebrated. To my nose and on my skin, the first notes present are a kind of lemon-candy citrus. But this does not last long till a cinnamon takes over-- not a sweet pastry style cinnamon, a shove the cinnamon stick in your mouth and chomp on it kind of cinnamon. But, running along the cinnamon comes that resinous cypress aroma. It's not quite the same as pine; it's more earthy than pine. Nevertheless, the image this fragrance congers in my mind is that of a lumberjack in a cabin who just realized it's Christmas. So, he heads off to the woods to find a tree. He couldn't find a pine, so he just grabs a fresh cypress tree, pulls it up by the roots, and carries it home. Once he's back at the cabin, he decorates the tree exclusively in cinnamon sticks the previous resident left in the kitchen. Once this lumberjack is done with the tree, he smells like Halston Z-14. I don't mean that Z-14 is exclusively a holiday scent. I just mean that it would be at home at Christmas time. Really, I'd say Z-14 would work great just about any time for someone who loves Polo Green but would like something a little lighter and-- more "at home"-- but just as manly. To me, it smells like the walking through an old-growth forest and arriving to a warm cabin. I know many connect this to 1970's clubbing contexts. I have no connection to that arena. It may have been worn by all the guys in the disco, but, to me, it's more Paul Bunyan than John Travolta.

Happy and disappointed, happy because this smells great and for some reason more modern than people give it credit for, to me it smells like an easier-to-wear polo green type scent. It’s very brown and you get the warm lemon and hot cinnamon, the crunchy faded green tree leaves and aged woods, and the dry, rough leather at the base - really does smell tea-like as others say, but that black Punjana tea. Disappointed because it really is weak, my 240ml bottle is from January 2021 and I am almost relieved I got the bigger bottle as I went from “I’ll always have this scent” to “is 240ml enough?”. This is usually a ridiculous question but concerning this batch of Z14, I find it to be relevant. I hope it is just a serious case of nose blindness but I have tried this on wrist and on neck, and when I spray it on wrist I have to snort it like a line for the scent to register. All in all this was cheap, smells good, I like the bottle, but it’s hard to spray as it’s so big and the atomizer is like a toddler’s cough. As I said, happy yet disappointed.

First and foremost, let me say that I've gotten a few retro fragrances lately. This a review of the 2005 Jeff Gordon bottle. I've been reading up on notes and watching reviews religiously. I've gotten Aramis Devin, Dior Jules (which I read were in the same boat as Polo Green). I got Z-14 because it was also lumped in this category and people have compared it to Tom Ford's Italian Cypress, which gets compared to Polo Green. Aramis Devin, Jules, Polo and Halston all share a similar smokey drydown, but in no way are they similar. Polo Green and Halston Z-14 have more in common out of the bunch with it's tobacco note. I was ready to be disappointed... Halston Z-14 opens up with a lemony-citrus zing similar to a cleaning product or lemon-lime soda. It has a cola-ish scent to it as well (I'm assuming it's the cinnamon). Now, here's where things interesting... It turns into one of the most masculine scents I've smelled in a while (if you have Polo Green, you'll know what I mean). The smell is absolutely amazing. The tobbaco, oakmoss, leather, amber and benzoin all combine to create a menthol, warm and potent smell. I'm still sniffing my arm. This is great for the fall/winter season. I highly recommend anyone who likes Polo Green and masculine NON-SWEET smelling fragrances to pick up a vintage on Ebay. Prices are reasonable. I ended up getting mine for $20 brand new. Now, I'm just waiting for my bottle of Bogart Signature. I hope it doesn't disappoint, I'm excited.

EVERGREEN ITALIAN CYPRESS Do you want to remove a hint of sadness? And clean old wounds trapped in your subconscious? Nothing is more appropriate than experiencing an astringent, refreshing and invigorating forest aroma to open horizons, reveal your wisdom and endure your personality. For this purpose, I always pick up a scent with a strong cypress note. The cypress aroma is fresh, persistent, pine-like, resinous, smoky, slightly sweet, and balsamic. Encourages introspection, inner silence, meditation, and self-assessment. It is a tonic that reveals a sense of freedom and detachment. It acts as an oppressor and facilitates the path to a moment of happiness. I remember using this scent as a teenager, but I almost had forgotten about its dark green scent. I only rediscovered this wonderful forest scent a few years ago. The bottle doesn't look like a Tom Ford bottle, but it really smells like a Tom Ford, it holds like a Tom Ford and projects like a Tom Ford. Is it a perfume by Tom Ford? - No! It's Halston Z-14!... and yes, Tom Ford's much newer Italian Cypress is a lot like it. This is a timeless fragrance. Male woody, leathery and mossy "old schools" were the reaction of the fragrance community of the 70s to the citric, musky flowers of the 60s. Back then, this perfume went very well with short haircut young men who wore leather jackets, blue jeans, and Converse sneakers. These were the days of the garage dance parties where Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath vinyl were heard. And the scent was Halston Z-14. Let's look at my rating for this evergreen milestone: ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ - Opening: 8.5 (earthy cypress and somewhat fresh citrus notes in anticipation of a warm cinnamon accord) - Drydown: 9.0 (some remaining dark green cypress and spicy cinnamon amid seductive heavy moss and leather) - Longevity: 9.0 (above average; it takes 9 hours with 3 sprays) - Sillage: 8.0 (5-foot radius with 2-hour projection) - Versatility: 6.5 (good for home use, open-air activities, and little else) - Portability: 7.5 (use it in winter as well in spring and fall colder days) - Exclusivity: 9.5 (this fragrance is still unique and has some similarities with its contemporary but no longer available "Balafre" by Lancôme. "Italian Cypress" by Tom Ford undoubtedly also looks similar, but is 34 years younger and much more expensive) - Praise: 8.0 (masculine, classy, and catching) - Quality: 8.5 (above average) - Presentation: 7.5 (the flask has an innovative design but with its vulgar dark glass without labels, it looks a bit boring.) - Price: 10.0 (I felt like King Kong after paying € 11.00 plus tax for my 125ml bottle) ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ Overall rating: 8.36 / 10.00 between 7 and 8 = above average; between 8 and 9 = recommended; greater than 9 = don't miss it; My opinion: I recommend this fragrance. It is advisable for men who are looking for a woody masculine scent. In my opinion, it goes very well with "Encre Noire" by Lalique. Is it worth buying blindly? I should tag it with the "Try before you buy" flag but buy it blindly because of its current low price. It deserves to be part of any collector's shelf. Note: I know that the last batch is somewhat watered down... life is hard sometimes! Music: Deep Purple - "Smoke On The Water"

All the stories about THIS wafting in the air at STUDIO 54 in 1978 ....... So when I purchased a recent bottle (recent being 5 years ago now) at T.J. Mish-Mosh here in the USA, all I got from it was Big Red gum or cinnamon candy . If you have a modern bottle from Marshall's - THROW it out and invest in a VINTAGE (they are easy to get). The vintage bottles have this "fizzy" quality that makes this unique ! I have a feeling - for the time- this must have felt very "avant garde " and a bit edgy . Again, VINTAGE ONLY on this and you will get that "Studio 54 Vibe" - zappy electrical and fizzy feelings . Some decadence too. And yeah , this is Disco Grandpa to a LOT of modern fragrances. I'm a middle–aged man that slept on this fragrance back in the 90's—I simply did not understand fragrances in light of their depth like I do now. There are many "classic" fragrances that I'd gladly leave in the 90's, but this is NOT one of them. Admittedly, the opening is still borderline aversion–inducing, but after about 10 minutes, this fragrances could certainly fit within these modern times. In further stages of the scent profile, it becomes a matured, welcoming fragrance that has a unique sillage that will leave you smelling more classy than many present–day frag heads. I enjoy it most at night while lounging at home, while running errands and occasionally while dressed up in a suit. It is quite versatile, but it's longevity is short–lived, so it's best to keep a bottle close by for re–application. I've had multiple bottles, and presently you can pick them up for so cheap~

I'm diving back into my 'fragrance heritage' and just picked up Z14. I had a friend in High School who wore it, so I remember what it smelled like on him, but not on me. I guess I can see a ghost of that fragrance, but not sure. The new bottle I have isn't bad, but its very subtle - like you had put the scent on and immediately washed it off with soap. Its not some nice spice going on, and a bit of dry leather. I'm not getting heartfelt nostalgia from this, but I will definitely wear it.

Many reviewers here write that it reminds them of a Christmas party in the 70s, but to me this perfume has more of an '80s vibe. The opening is explosive: overwhelming cinnamon, and green -mostly cypress - notes with faint hints of citrus to me, reminds me of the energy of some Sisters of Mercy songs. The drydown is dirty oakmoss, in contrast with the energetic opening, once it dries on your skin it is as exciting as a fart in a bottle. This is a fragrance that will offend. My brother told me it reminds him of the annoying and sticky pine scents of car air fresheners. It will induce headaches in many others. I find it offensive, although I love the energetic and unapologetic masculine power (and hate the drydown that makes me want to rub it off). It's also cheap, so you're not risking anything by blind buying this.

Cinnamon-heavy at first, which thanks to the freshness of citruses and the minty-ness of basil could easily translate into that Big Red chewing gum sensation. Hints of Tiger balm rather than Christmas cookies. After that, an amber toilet soap from the past takes the stage. Thеse soaps are still around and will be. French-smelling, creating a comfort aura, a smell beyond fashion trends. It's a true vintage, you can't fool anyone. But it nevertheless makes all that stupid "grandpa barbershop" comments irrelevant in this case. Z14 is in a league of its own. Feels safe and reassuring even when you have your doubts about wearing a 50 years old fragrance. The price it pays for being this timeless? One could get used to it too quick, bored with it too soon.

Better than it used to be…but maybe gone? I’ve heard conflicting reports that this old classic has been either discontinued or reformulated (again). I just picked up a bottle and it really does smell a bit different from a previous bottle I got about 7 or 8 years ago, in a surprisingly good way. I’ve smelled vintage early 80s and newer Z14, and seen it go from fantastic to, well, not terrible but certainly not great. To me, the late 1990s and 2000s EA formulation smells like a cheap copy of Z14, in the same way that discount knock-offs resemble the originals but are clearly much more synthetic, simplified, and coarse. That formulation smells “similar” to Z14, but not “like” Z14. However, let’s take a moment and face reality. With IFRA regulation changes over the years, Z14 is one fragrance that couldn’t possibly be the same today as it was in the early days. The original formulation’s ingredients and proportions made it especially hard hit by what is and isn’t allowed today, so it was bound to suffer more than some others. That doesn’t excuse the shameless cheapening of the ingredients, but it does mean that it’s really not fair to compare old and new. This bottle, however, is not bad at all. It doesn’t have the overwhelming synthetic cinnamon opening that has plagued recent formulations, and instead harkens back to the fresh, lemony chypre opening of the originals. A bit linear for the first 30 minutes or so with a lot of cypress, it settles in with a cedar and benzoin base under some residual cinnamon and a bit of jasmine and patchouli. The leather is a little weak and the oakmoss is necessarily synthetic, and it would be nice to see them push up the vetiver and amber a bit, but overall it’s got a solid mid-range quality and a very classic feel. It still doesn’t smell as deeply rich and smooth as the very old bottles, but it doesn’t smell like $10 cologne made from chewing gum and candle scents anymore, either. Now more in the spirit of old Z14 again, it has a warm, aromatic, spicy smell that feels like an adults’ party around a Christmas tree, especially when your slightly louche friend (or is that the ghost of Halston?) shows up. Definitely not a sweet or fresh scent for youngsters, but surprisingly not dated like you might think. A classic of its type that deserves to be tried again.

Ok, so if you wanna smell like a cinnamon bomb this fragrance is for you, not saying it's not good, but the cinnamon note is harsh for me and the most noticeable accord, and i think can offend some other noses, the fragrance itself well made and the projection is great, i use it as a bathroom freshener

I have both a vintage bottle and a new bottle of Halston Z-14. I wore it back in the 70's when I was a teenager and I have always had a bottle around. The new formulation is different but it is not so different that I do not feel like I am wearing Halston-Z14. This is a great classic fragrance and when it first came out it wasn't so affordable. Now it is so go grab a bottle.

This is what Fahrenheit’s father wore. 2019 batch is smelling way better than when I got it. Lemon mostly smoothed out & cinnamon explosion off the top has chilled out. Result is very green warm aromatic cinnamon leather. Mask you Lynne. Not for sissy sprayers or hot days. Just buy it. If you hate it, try it again in a year or 2. Seems to be a common theme with budget frags that they smooth out over time.

Classic, sophisticated, iconic, sexy and timeless. Created in 1974 by Vincent Marcello and Max Gavarry, who incidentally also created Estee Lauder's Private Collection, Caron's Yatagan and many other fragrances. I've been wearing Halston Z-14 since I was sixteen. I'm now sixty and still wear it, and still love it. At the time it was the fragrance to wear & Halston was the designer of the times. If you like lemon, basil, patchouli, galbanum, bergamot, oakmoss, artemisia, coriander, sandalwood, mandarin, amber and musk you'll love Z-14. You cannot go wrong with Z-14. It's become a legendary classic men's fragrance like Chanel's Pour Monsieur or Dior's Eau Sauvage - although nothing like them. I think because its price range is not in the Tom Ford category (a 200ml bottle is approximately £20) people overlook it. It was the Netflix biopic of Halston's life & career that saw a renewed interest in all things Halston, who tragically died of AIDS in 1990....one of our last superstars. Halston designed knockout glamorous gowns for Liza Minnelli, Elizabeth Taylor, Martha Graham, Lauren Bacall, Ann Miller, Rita Hayworth, Marlene Dietrich and many of the greatest, legendary stars. Halston completely understood and epitomised nonchalant elegance and glamour, with the glamour dialled up full. Z-14 is a really fabulous, elegant scent, and, come to think of it, easily unisex...I could write a whole other paragraph on the beautiful bottle...

I was very harsh on this fragrance the first time I reviewed it and if course that offends lovers of it. I'm wearing it now after a year+ and perceive it in a little different context now. I'm not as harsh on it. Some compare it to one of my favorites, Dior Eau Sauvage EDT. But it's far more harsh than Eau Sauvage EDT and comes across as more crude. The lemon, cypress and leather give it a certain harshness. It smells nothing like Ralph Lauren Polo Green or Drakkar Noir.

A fantastic scent co-created by a nose who designed only 3 scents. He stacks up with the best noses of all time, with only 3 scents to his name. I see some of the younger users think this is a cinnamon bomb. Like a rotary dial phone it is hard for them to figure out. I can explain, this scent is Christian Dior Eau De Sauvage, 1966 with woods and leather. I understand Tom Ford tried to copy it. Not even close. You have to get this one to experience it. Pick yours up while you can, soon it will be going for hundreds of dollars on ebay because it is now a discontinued masterpiece.

Maybe this was the inspiration for Italian Cypress. Maybe it was great in the past. But... I think it's just a bland, dated, cinnamon bomb. I don't dislike it, per se. Z-14 is a famous (and once ubiquitous) chypre from the 1970s that is still made today, although IFRA regulations have prevented the owners of the Halston brand from using real oakmoss anymore. Because I feel that almost all chypres originally made with oakmoss deserve to be sampled in that form if at all possible, I circumvented the prohibition by buying online the special Jeff Gordon collector's edition of this fragrance, which still uses oakmoss and can be acquired fairly inexpensively. The opening is spectacular, and reminds me very much of one of my favorites, Valentino Vendetta Pour Homme, to which many have compared Z-14 in the "This perfume reminds me of..." feature above. The cinnamon note (which on my skin is not strong) and the cypress note (which very much is!) are more apparent to me in the drydown, which as a consequence I did not enjoy nearly so much: cypress is a depressing note for me, since it smells both funereal and medicinal. I'm glad I only bought a small 30 ml. bottle of this. I don't think I will acquire more, although I don't actively dislike this, even despite the cypress.

Several fragrance influencers on YouTube claim this to be one of the best fragrances ever created. The latest versions are cheaply made, but I mix this one with Gucci Guilty Absolute, which gives it a bit more punch and longevity. I’m surprised no one has noticed their similarities, as both have Cypress top notes and medicinal spice undertones; GGA’s being cypress with vetiver and leather, and Z14’s being cypress with cinnamon, coriander and leather.

If Tom Ford’s Italian Cypress was born out of Studio 54 I’ll assume you know about the designer Halston (if you don’t there’s a documentary on Prime and a drama on Netflix- both really worth a watch) but for me he was ‘Tom Ford’ but with an element of (apparent) contrivance and a coke habit. Which is my hackneyed segue to say that this fragrance has been compared to to Tom Ford’s Italian Cypress. I can’t say directly, as I have never smelt Italian Cypress before, but speaking with others who have there’s a similarity. Which is more’s the pity as I do like what the perfumers behind Tom Ford’s EARLIER scents did and would like to be able to compare. Anyway. All I will say that it is evident that this fragrance has been obviously reformulated over that last 40 years as I doubt this has the potency of the original from the 70s, though I doubt it’s strayed far from the original notes possibly just produced with cheaper ingredients (not much of a surprise as if you watch the documentary about Halston on Prime you’ll see the company that owns his name are more inclined toward piling shit high and selling it cheaper) I will admit that I was a bit trepidatious about buying this; I had been stung by nostalgia in the past (Quorum - meh, thankfully my father might still be a fan). This is dated. But it’s on the side of the classics, thankfully. Now for those of you who want to wear stuff to get ‘COMPLIMENTS’ - you will be disappointed as this is not one of those classic scents that will have you draped in ladies dropped panegyrics. It’s not a big projector either and the longevity is good for about four hours. This is not ‘Fall Guy’ Lee Majors this is ‘According to Jim’ Lee Majors. I will say this CINNAMON! and there’s a woodsy element to it that is warm and sexy in that way the 70s only can conjure. It’s not a strident as how we would view or the imagine ‘sexy’ conjures up now…there’s an innocent clumsy unawareness to its sex appeal. It’s not a blatant ‘Disco Casanova’; no the notes cypress cinnamon and CITRUS come through but not too harshly as some have said. Yes this is a 70s classic and does compare to some like I said of popular classics from the era. Hmmmm steady on though, it’s on the side of the ‘classics’ but it’s not a bonafide; in my opinion. As any version bought now will be a bastard child of a thousand accountants and micro-managers so it’s like Aries Spears’ version of Denzel Washington a good impression but not the real thing. What’s my impression: this is almost like Jamiroquai’s later iteration; the one that has been inspired by (copied) Nile Rodgers/CHIC. Actually… this won’t mean anything to any of you born in the 90s but this is like if the ‘Twitter Generation’ had been allowed to remake a Mel Brooks film… Yeah it’s ‘Blazin Saddles’; You’ll watch but spend all the time wondering what happened to it, as all the punchlines, fun and strong racial commentary is missing. I will wear this on those days when I feel like listening to The Jones Girls, Hall & Oates or Teddy Pendegrass leaving an extra button undone on my Tyrwhitt shirt at work. Marks: a solid 7/10 - a 70s wish unfulfilled but a great scent to have.

This was my first cologne about mid 80's. This was all seasons, day or night. Find the one that says oakmoss on the box--Imagine an 80's band without the bassist--imagine The Police without Stingyou gotta have the oakmoss. The rest of the reformulations are rather dull and overly cinnamony. These colognes and aftershaves were relaunched 4-5-6 times. If you are searching for an original, original, look for; 'Parfums Halston Made in France EDT' on the box--and most likey an extensive ingredients list will NOT be present. Those 'Parfums Halston France' boxes are the earliest I have seen and own--probably late, late 70's early 80's. The first few reformulations are pretty much the same as the original--It starts changing when oakmoss was banned, around 2014 or so. Anything with Elizabeth Arden or AE on the label are remixes of remixes. Miami, New York or London is a remix. Even if it says; dist, French Fragrances, it is a remix etc. Z-14 TIMELINE-- 1974 Halston Fragrances, Inc. was created. In 1981, we see the name Parfums Halston being used up until around 1990. 1983 Halston Fragrances was licensed to JC Penney and was a division of Playtex International. 1986 Halston Fragrances, Inc was acquired by the Revlon Group and fragrances were reformulated. 1987 Halston Fragrances are now marketed under Revlon’s Prestige Fragrances, Ltd. Fragrances were most likely reformulated. These items will be marketed with the following “Made for © Halston Fragrances New York, New York, 10153. London” Other times you may find the words “Halston Enterprises, Inc.”, “Halston Fragrances, Distr. Lemon, Cinnamon, and Leather oh boy!... It is what it is, you can buy these at some Gas Stations for crying out loud. That's actually why I own a bottle because I just had to know. This fragrance is exactly what you'd expect if you were to look at the notes beforehand. Definitely a darker scent that is more appropriate for colder weather or the night time. This would be my go to frag in a zombie apocalypse. 5/10

I bought this on a whim after watching the Halston series on Netflix and seeing that it was fairly inexpensive. I'm on the fence as to whether I like it or not. It's absolutely a fall/winter/night fragrance. I get a LOT of cinnamon and woody scents as others have noted, but I feel the cinnamon really sticks out more to me than others have implied. It's fairly stout. It also reminds me a little of an old cologne my grandfather wore called British Sterling. If the "heavier scents" are your thing, you'll like this.

I picked up the current formulation awhile back. Recently started trying it out again, and I am quite impressed. This developed and has clear stages through the dry down. The opening has a nice lemon that balances well with the basil and cypress. You really can pick out various notes as this dries, and the woods and leather are really solid for a retro offering, I even get a soapy Vetiver vibe that comes and goes through wearing. This is a mature scent, in a similar way Bentley Intense is, meaning it could be challenging in some situations, but IMO this is solid and can be had for next to nothing. To me this is not really like other fragrances from the time period, yes manly and retro, but still rather unique from its counterparts. I think this is worth a try, if you enjoy old school fragrances this one is pretty user friendly with great performance. I would recommend going light to start, see how it performs for you as an individual first. I really enjoy this one.

Wow! This stuff is amazing! I bought this for my husband a couple of years ago as a gift. He has never been into fragrances too much, but he recently started wearing them because of family members giving them as gifts in recent years. I love this fragrance. I know that this fragrance is named after the famous fashion designer, Roy Halston Frowick. I had a bottle of the original Halston perfume for women when I was in my late teens/early twenties. I remember the line about Halston from the Billy Joel pop song, "Big Shot". That's what initially sparked my interest in his fragrances years ago. The designer, Halston, is also mentioned in the movie, The Devil Wears Prada. This fragrance is a beast! My husband generally leaves for work earlier than I do, and I can smell this fragrance long after he has left the building! I can also smell it on him after he comes home from work (though it is more faint), and I can still smell it on his clothing when I do the laundry! I can even get a faint whiff of it after I've washed his shirts! WOW! This fragrance is very masculine. It is spicy and woodsy with a little bit of sweetness. Unfortunately, it is not my husband's favorite. He thinks it's "too strong". His favorite is St. Bart's (Tommy Bahama) which is also a beast, but smells very different, of course. Our young daughter seems to love this Halston fragrance, though. She loves to use it as an air freshener!

Somehow both chemical and medicinal. Pretty sure this was what my brother bought a spray of for a quarter in the bathroom of a gas station in South Carolina in 1983. That was a long car ride. After the dry down it still smells like a car but this time the cartoon shaped air freshener hanging from the rear view mirror instead of the gleeful 8 year old hopped up on soda. I bought a decant from Microperfumes. Doubt it was the vintage formula.

An underrated classic. Great value for the money. It is similar to Dior's Eau Sauvage ('66) in some ways but is a lot cheaper. I've never smelled Italian Cypress so I can't compare those two. The smell is inoffensive and isn't dated even though it was released in 1976. Not quite the fragrance I remember my father wearing long ago (reformulations) but still worth sampling/buying. The opening to me very close to “Eau Sauvage” by Dior but a bit darker and the dry down close to je suis un homme type of smell which “a bit dirty animalic” leathery cinnamon with slight of musk and “hints” of sweet creaminess, upon reaching drydown the opening notes stays in the background, the lemony basilic cypress, fresh and cosy, very nice smell and pretty good performance, for what you pay you have a very good quality and also if you like classic scents that is wearable nicely till today imo.

THIS IS UNIQUE; NOTHING ELSE LIKE IT. I just found my vintage 2.5 ounce French Fragrance made natural spray bottle with 20% in it (and 50%+ matching aftershave bottle). I also found an unmarked mini 5-7 ml bottle with a few drops left. The former smells a bit off at the beginning (like an ingredient turned) and then smells good after dry down, but a drop from that mini, ah, that's the juice I remember from my early 80s college days. I loved this unique scent. Oddly, sadly, after wearing it again after all these years, I'm not certain that I need to search for a vintage replacement bottle.

Z-14 reminds me of old school pouches or decor bowls filled with cinnamon potpourri that families set out back in the 90s. You can easily write off the current Z-14 formulation as simply a fleeting, cheap, synthetic, spicy, neutered, "dated" 70s/80s cologne that is a shell of its former self. Or generalize it as a linear, drugstore cinnamon-bomb with poor performance. But there is still something to appreciate here. Z-14 is affordable and accessible (still sold at my local drugstore). It has a cozy, familiar scent. A refined scent? Absolutely not. Still, a bottle sits around my house in a random room to accompany during colder months when I want a quick spritz while reading or relaxing. Longevity is terrible so it’s perfect as a quick refresher. I don’t wear Z-14 outside my house as there are too many superior cold weather frag options. Yet, like the cheap cinnamon potpourri that my mom and relatives would set out, some things are best suited for enjoyment within the confines of your own home. Recommended: the documentary “Halston”directed by Frédéric Tcheng, an interesting look at Halston the man, businessman, and the fashion house. Score: 6.5 out of 10 Would I purchase a replacement bottle? No, but am curious to try a vintage.

(Review of the Elizabeth Arden formulation) Halston Z-14 is a fragrance often forgotten and cast aside by other giants of its era, such as Polo. In reality, this perfume launched an entire generation of spicebombs and thoroughly masculine scents, often referred to as "power scents." Gone are the days of 1 spritz lasting two days, unfortunately. While Z-14 has changed over the years, due to IFRA regulations and the brand’s sale over the decades, the current formula holds up well in my opinion. This also does not smell dated and old-manish, likely due to all the perfumes who initially mimicked its properties or drew from it. Unlike what some have said, younger men can pull this off just as well as older ones, but one needs to exude confidence and know themselves for Z-14 to really “work.” The cinnamon is not overpowering for me but certainly strong, so those who dislike the note should stay away from this. I would put this on about 10-20 minutes before seeing someone, as the top notes can be quite intense at first and overpowering to some. Z-14 opens with heavy cypress and lemon/bergamot notes and dries down to the potent cinnamon and cedar smells, with patchouli and vetiver on the side. The base oakmoss surely was more prominent before IFRA regulations and is now significantly weaker . The amber was probably stripped over time as well. I think many reviews calling Z-14 “long-lasting” are reviewing the original and FF formulas, as I would call the current type moderate, lasting at most 5 1/2 hours; but that could just be my skin chemistry. Sillage is enough, neither too strong nor too weak. Somewhat of a compliment getter, though guys tend to respond more than women do. I am surprised many people rate this as a day/night fragrance, and I disagree. I think this is best suited for late afternoons and evenings, with something fresher and less dominant in the day. Perhaps the real Halston would agree, as he intended Z-14 to be an evening perfume, while its counterpart, 1-12, was for daytime hours. It holds up well to hot summer nights, which is a benefit but is better suited for cooler temperatures. Pretty hard to beat it for the price. Even the 4.2oz/125ml bottle is $15. Z-14 is a good lesson in understanding price does not necessarily equal quality. Summary Type: EdT Season: Perennial Time: Night Attire: Casual/Semi-Formal Blind Buy: Yes Projection: 6/10 Sillage: 5/10 Presentation: 8/10 (EA went cheap with the cap) Versatility: 6/10 Longevity: 6/10 Value: 10/10 P.S. Despite me rating this partly as casual, I do not mean something like sweats or another kind of leisure wear. Something with a collar, whether it’s a polo or an oxford, will fit better with the scent profile.

Lemon & cinnamon seem to be the "reach-for" in a lot of reformulations of late. Must be "cheap" & "safe" options post IFRA & sell-offs/re-releases. If the original frag had those notes....yes...boy!....are they amplified. If it didn't; then a lot lot of them do now. Agree about modern Boucheron PH; now more lemon-centric & in my beloved Aramis Tuscany, the lemon is way-up. And I wont even comment here on what they did to original Aramis post 2019! And CK Obsession Men; after being castrated of most of it's leather, amber & musk, been taken down the heavy-shake-of-the-cinnamon-jar route. But yes, Halston Z14 was a wonderfully different, but not too daring frag. Perfect to wear on a date or any occasion you wanted to not smell like the masses du jour, but at the same time, not stand-out, projecting a delicious, but heavily niche or polarizing frag like Ungaro PH. I have a vintage mini 15ml & the warm woody notes give a balanced rough texture the way Chanel Antaeus does in a totally different frag-fest. Vale Halston. The 1st non-European designer to make an international mark!

Just received my new bottle of Z-14 in the so-called "cologne" formula (which I think was the only strength ever released, no, other than "after shave"?). This had been a scent I wore quite often back in the period of about 1977--1983, so I feel I got to know it quite well. This new formula is decidedly different to the old. It's more 2-dimensional now, rather than the 3-dimensional work of art I remember. This new version is very strong on the topmost lemony/fruit/green components, sharp, astringent and almost harsh, but the heart and drydown is not as mellow, warm and pleasantly musty as I remember it. Now it seems to be moving into BOUCHERON (hommes) territory: ie., intensely lemony/aromatic, and less leather/musk. Interestingly, I am not getting the big cinnamon note that everyone is claiming. It seems they mainly wanted to preserve just the basic cosmetic character of Z-14... that is, the notes which simply add up to saying, "This is a men's cologne." and dispense with the intriguing, warmer, uniquely characterful elements... either because they are now too expensive to source, or have fallen under IFRA restrictions, or some modern test panel felt they were too "old fashioned" and "70's" smelling. Alas... !

For the price point, I love it. It isn’t the longest lasting, or the best silage, but I love the smell. My grandmother actually wore it funnily enough. The smell is cheap enough that I still spray it on my clothes or skin to remember her, and I even spray it on my bed or curtains as a sort of air freshener. It is amazing to me. It’s something I spray shamelessly because it’s not that expensive, but I also love wearing it to bed. It’s very warm and cozy, inoffensive, and it reminds me of wintertime but could be worn for hot weather too for me because the cinnamon isn’t that powerful.

The first time was a citrus blast on the opening. I don't quite get that strong of a blast anymore. Later, the basil whacked me in the face. Then again, cinnamon became pronounced later after having not noticed it before. I have yet to detect a strong leather note. Hopefully soon! It's a good scent. Classic. Somehow, well blended while at the same time the notes are detectable. At once sweet and herbal. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and St. Patrick's day in a bottle. Versatile. Just not for hot summer weather. Unless it's night time.

faescen, I purchased a "vintage" off eBay. So glad I didn't spend much because it wasn't vintage, just the latest reformulation. You're right on your scent assessment and longevity and sillage are terrible. However, I purchased a Jeff Gordon set and it has that mossy kick Z-14 was known for. Longevity and sillage are much better. Brings back memories.

I got a bottle recently, 2018 batch, the cinnamon is very forward, and it remind me of some medical massage oil for sore muscles. I have a large bottle of 4711 laying around so I try playing with it, I put one spray of Z14 and two spray of 4711 (different atomizer so volume may not be the same in one spray) on paper and it smell a lot fresher and less cinnamon-ish in the opening. then I try it on my skin but it doesn't work as well. I try mixing them in a decant bottle, about 1 portion of Z14 to 2, 3 portions of 4711. It works, the citrus in 4711 contained the cinnamon overkill in the beginning and by the time the citrus is gone, the very slight rosemary and white floral mix well with the heart note of Z14 and the cinnamon is finally behaving

At this point, I consider myself to be something of a Halston men's fragrance historian. The crown jewel and focus of that study, of course, is the masterpiece Z-14. I have owned all three major formulations of this fragrance made by Halston, French Fragrances, and finally Elizabeth Arden in antichronological order. First to come to me was the Elizabeth Arden version, purchased on red tag clearance from a TJ Maxx. It smelled like a tree shaped car air freshener with a chewed piece of Big Red stuck to the back. I wrote it off from that point until my dad came up to visit me and noticed it sitting on my shelf. He told me he used to wear "Halston" back in the day, so I gave him the bottle. He remarked that it didnt smell as he had remembered it. Over a year later and over a year deeper into this hobby when I had fallen in love with these kind of woody classic fragrances I read about the brutal reformulation that Z-14 and 1-12 overtook as the Halston empire crashed and the perfume portion was sold off to Miami based French Fragrances Inc, who manufactured the Halston perfume line through the 90s and early 2000s. I read that these FFI versions, which could be found very affordably on Ebay, were far better and more honest to the original fragrance, so I purchased a lot that came with a 75ml, a 30ml, and the Aftershave. Love at 2nd smell. The 2nd formulation by FFI is a chypre fragrance that boasts a great lemon/bergamot opening that quickly fades to a deep green cypress and leather beauty that lasts 10+ hours. It's phenominal, with only two drawbacks: 1.) It has that "cologne" note. There's no avoiding or sidestepping it, that alcohol/aftershave vibe is there, and a heavy dose will draw memory of a "cologne guy". 2.) I have twicedrawn comments from women a decent clip older than myself that I smell like their dad or ex boyfriend. To be expected I suppose. Finally the original formulation. I purchased a 3.9oz (weird, huh?) spray version with the atomizer that jets out from what is now the plastic cap on newer formulations. This version is much spicier and features a metric ton of oakmoss and leather. Barrel chested, brutal. It is hard to imagine Roy Halston wanting himself to smell like this, though I can imagine it was appealing to him in another sense. Unlike some other "oakmoss" fragrances, the original Z14 really does smell mossy. In conclusion and ranked: 1. 2nd Formulation (French Fragrances, Miami Lakes, FL) deep green beautiful crisp cologne that can be worn year round, and appreciated by folks of all ages. Unique and long lasting, this is an absolute gem and it is one of my top 5 favorite fragrances. 2. 1st Formulation (Halston Fragrances Inc, New York) A huge tiger in the jungle. Leather and oakmoss beast that veers a bit offensive to wear in most public settings. A word of art, but a hard one to pick up and spray yourself with 3. 3rd Formulation (Elizabeth Arden) Don't waste you time. Smells nothing like Halston intended and a waste of $12. I did briefly use it as a car spray, it wasn't terrible for that purpose. P.S., I can't speak for original Polo Green or the Floris this is compared to, but I do own Tom Ford's Italian Cypress and it's a beauty as well. It's smokier and richer than any of the 3 z-14 versions and I love to wear it. That said, if I had to pick my French Fragrances Z14 or Italian Cypress, I would pick the Halston that can be had for $25 on ebay for a full bottle. If the cologne facet of Z14 is enough to scare you off, the smoky, rich TF Italian Cypress is probably the way to go, it reminds a little bit less of a guy in an '87 Camaro.

This is a first fragrance my mom bought me when I was in high school. I didn't appreciate the scent, nor did I know how to apply fragrances correctly. From my memory, this was an okay scent but changed to more salty rancid smell as time went on. I mean the fragrance itself not in terms of the application and how the fragrance faded on my skin. It was okay but felt it was for more older gentlemen. After spraying and the drydown smelled like grandpa sitting in his favorite chair with shirt and sweater. The bottle is tacky and I definitely do not like the bottle design. The bottle color should have been lavender-ish or clearer pinkish tone which would have given the scent more refreshing smoother sentiment. I rate fragrances with a category that people don't normally talk about, that is how easy it is to get the scent off of the skin when I take shower. This one came off after three to four washes of soaping. Rating: 6.6/10 Season: Winter Time: Night Attire: Casual Unique: 7..3/10 Projection: 2/10 Sillage: 3/10 Longevity: 6/10 Washable: 9/10 Value: 6/10

Max G. is Max G. he is a very good perfumer who knows how to play with leather, incense and flowers. This perfume it's unisex, sorry gentlemen but unfortunately this perfume worn by a woman, especially in suit, it's "amor" instantly. I know a lot of men will say you have enough stop taking ours....well 😏 sorry gentlemen but this type of perfumes are like the female ones from 85-97 who were created for feminists, powerful, high career women sooo isn't our fault, as long as on the shelves of perfumeries brands are stubborn to put perfumes for easy women easy go, we need a new solutions to not fight for vintages every few months when we need a new bottles and this one is still on the market with the first formulation 🙃 we have no choice. Now about the perfume, on a woman skin the first base is about gardenia and basil very interesting and charming, the second base a little cinnamon with something floral I think some carnation because it's green, coriander and cardamom and a very few drops of jasmine and patchouli, and the final a very floral leather with amber. It's a cold perfume, very good for office. Now on a man, or at least on my husband skin, first base is very citrus-green and lavender, the middle base I don't feel cinnamon on him, I feel cedar, vetiver, a soft flower and a little earthy from patchouli, the last base it's a little oakmoss, benzoin and tonka, the leather hmmm not really but the amber it's there. It lasts for three years on both skin types and it's very powdery and close to the skin, very business.

As an aside, if you're looking for original circa 1974 bottles of this, you might have better luck with mini-bottles. When I bought my now iconic bottle of Halston (for women) just after it came out, it came with I believe two mini bottles of the men's scents. The 1970's were way before unisex scents, and 1-12 and Z-14 were really masculine anyway, so I bet a lot of women just stashed them into the backs of their closets. Of course they could have been hitting the estate sales decades ago, but there may still be a lot of them around.

I wish I could go back in time to the mid 1970’s just so that I can run into a department store and buy ALL of Halston’s fragrances because I’m certain these new formulations don’t do the originals justice! I recently purchased Z14 and have to say it’s the worst fragrance I have ever smelled! It basically smells like someone soaked Red Hots candy in water for a few days and then bottled it. I don’t smell cypress, coriander, leather, or any other notes listed in the description. Just nauseating synthetic cinnamon. I heard revlon is selling off some of its portfolio due to COVID and I’m hoping someone else takes over Halston and brings these fragrances back to life!

I have tried the current EA version, the French Fragrances version (they eventually changed their name to Elizabeth Arden, but I digress), and the original vintage version. Here are the differences. Current EA version: This opens up with a lemon floor cleaner vibe. In retrospect, all of the Z-14s have a lame opening. But this EA version in particular was my first encounter with Z-14. I was livid. People had given reviews saying it smelled like Tom Ford Italian Cypress. No. No it does not. Not even close. This was horrible. Ridiculous. But after much spazzing on my part, it began to dry down and something in this scent began to smell like disco balls and Chevy Chevelles. It was not strong, but it was there. A sort of ghost of Old Spice. There was a nice scent on my skin and I began to calm down and actually kind of like this stuff. Then my more vintage bottles arrived in the mail. I'm telling you, the difference will make you cry. On my left arm I sprayed the French Fragrances version and the right arm I sprayed the original vintage version. The French Fragrances version had the familiar lemony opening and then dried down into vivid nostalgia. I never wore Halston Z-14 in the past, but the 1970s flooded into my memories. This scent was there then, somewhere, possibly everywhere. The FF version is my jewel. I only bought one ounce of it, but I can't imagine using it too often, because I have so much of the cheap current version and I also bought a couple of the more vintage version. I will only be using the FF version for special occasions. The original Halston Z-14 was also powerfully nostalgic. The main difference being a more smoky accord that I didn't get in the FF version. Same lame opening, but make no mistake, it is eventually sublime. I honestly considered selling all of my other fragrances and just wearing the Z-14. I talked myself out of it, so I still have a couple dozen alternatives. But Z-14 is my jam. It's from another time and another world: The world I came from. UPDATE: I recently purchased a decant of Tom Ford Italian Cypress from another eBayer. It dries down to smell almost identical to Z-14. So now I believe there may be some significant batch variations in Italian Cypress. The first decant I got smelled like an ethereal Christmas tree pine. The second smelled like Halston Z-14. They are VERY different. So which is the real Italian Cypress?

Just lovely. Starts off like a greener version of Loewe Pour Homme. The same delicious authentic bitter lemon and basil note headline the show for about 30 minutes. Then - little by little, the rest of the notes begin to unfold and transform the composition leaving a trail that is indeed very reminiscent of Italian Cypress. The attention to detail here is just fantastic. This is not a replacement for IC by any means, as the TF has something different about it that I truly enjoy, but both are worth owning if you're a fan of the genre. Excellent stuff. By the way this review is of the vintage formulation.

This is one of the cheaper, if not, cheapest, reformulated classics currently available. I personally love the modern-for-the-time font of "Halston Z-14" and the very simple but elegant "pinched" bottle design. The actual scent was pretty off putting at first. The first time, I dismissed it as merely a blast of cinnamon ala Big Red Chewing Gum. With several more wearings I noticed the dry down is slightly more nuanced. There's cinnamon and other elements at play like leather or suede maybe. People have described this as an "old smelling" fragrance, or retro, but me personally, I have no point of reference. I've never smelled this fragrances on anyone before. To me, to really appreciate this fragrance it has to be in cold weather, and preferably some rain involved. In response, this scent becomes extremely inviting. A very masculine scent but it doesn't evoke as much ruggedness as the outdoorsy Polo does. They're definitely contemporaries in the bold 70s masculine department but it's slightly less love-or-hate than Polo. Don't let the price tag influence your opinion of the fragrance. I did and I initially dismissed it as "cheap cinnamon" but later on I realized it's quite good. If you like mature scents like John Varvatos Vintage I think you'll appreciate this one. VINTAGE vs REFORMULATION: The vintage is different in the opening and middle. It starts out with with a citrus opening, and then gradually transformers into its basenotes, going from fresh to heavy. The reformulation has none of this evolution, instead opens up very cinnamony, like Big Red. Both have essentially the same dry down though, with the vintage being *slightly* better at the base. In my opinion, it's a negligible difference, as I've worn them side by side. It's all about the dry down, so the current stuff is exceptionally good, and worth getting for the price. SIMILAR TO: The most modern scent that's similar to it is John Varvatos Vintage. That one is more versatile and probably a little less challenging, but I think the Z-14 is "richer" in scent. Although it doesn't smell similar to Polo, I've often heard them compared to one another, as if they were rivals in the late 70s/early 80s. While I find the opening and middle of Polo to be the better scent, the dry down of Z-14 is better, imo. They both have have this bold, alpha, old school masculine vibe, Z-14 is more pleasant smelling in the end. Polo, at least the 2015 juice, dries down into One Man Show territory, as it becomes almost pure cigarette butt/smoke. Avon Deep Woods reminds me a lot of Z-14 in the opening and middle, but it dries down into the more typical Avon amber smell. CONCLUSION: This is a wonderfully sophisticated classic masculine scent that can be had for a ridiculously inexpensive price. It's become my replacement for Polo and JV Vintage. It's a very delicious scent, kind of like a proto gourmand in a way. And I don't like gourmands. Bottle presentation, price, and scent are perfection. 8/10

Halston was a premier quality designer back in the day. He dressed some of the worlds most beautiful, elegant women and handsome men. My dad wore Z-14 and it’s one of my earlier fragrance memories. I bought several bottles for him as it was one of his favorites. And I loved it! The fragrance world (what’s popular) has morphed a lot since then. Fresh and fruity are in and heavy is out — at least for many. Personally I adore heavy fragrances, especially when they are properly balanced and well blended. We also live at a latitude where we enjoy cooler weather and all four seasons. This is a fantastic cool weather frag. (Though I haven’t smelled it in many years; I am assuming it has been reformulated.). Many of today’s frags are disappointing to me, especially the more simplistic and lighter ones. Of course there are also wonderful new trends, materials, and methods that we didn’t have back then, which I love. If you enjoy classicly styled heavy fragrances you may love Z-14. It’s loud, but in a classy and elegant way. It is a bit of a spice bomb. (Not to be confused with Viktor & Rolf frag of the same name!) Regardless of any of that — You do NOT base a fragrance review on PRICE. PERIOD. Everyone in the fragrance world knows that all frags go through a pricing structure cycle based on a number factors. (Popularity, manufacturer, popularity of the line as a whole, competing brands, marketing trends, etc.) My reviews are not based on price EVER; they are based on my impressions of the notes, quality of materials, and overall character of the scent to my nose - and of course my own personal bias (which I try to convey openly, explain and account for so as not to sway others unfairly in one direction of another.).

Halston Z-14 is a completely overbearing fragrance - at first. If you manage to get through the initial, typically alarming reaction from this fragrance then after about 15-20mins the dry down is intoxicating. I actually hated this bold fragrance for years. But overtime as my fragrance palette matured I found myself revisiting it time after time, until one day I watched the Halston documentary and developed such an appreciation for the eccentric fashion designer. I fell in love with Z-14’s complexity. The affordability of this product can seem off putting, given the perception that cheap fragrances are crap - but it is not always the case. This fragrance may only cost anywhere from $9.99-$14.99-$24.99 but after 30mins of wearing this hidden classic it will smell and feel like you spent three to four times the amount for it. And get ready for the compliments! One of my favorite things about wearing this fragrance are the compliments it generates and the reactions once I reveal what I’m wearing. “Really?!”, “You must be lying”, “That does not smell like a cheap, old mans fragrance - it smells high-end”, “That is a fantastic scent!” ect. Buy a bottle, it will not break the bank and it will be a standout in your fragrance collection. 10/10

I'm kind of liking this, moss/cinnamon/citrus. I have to spend more time with it, think I'm starting to get the leather now. When the winter starts approaching I get experimental. I own a vintage splash Z14 edt. Made by Halston fragrances. I can’t find much info on the edt as the cologne is the one around. However this being the only Z14 I know I can only refer to it. I’m am not experienced with cypress as it is not a dominant note within perfume marketed to women. I consider perfume genderless soon Z14 goes. It starts off earthy lemony with a lot of cypress. The leather dances in early on. I cannot really tell if there is cinnamon, as I am not getting it. It’s a resinous scent with this magnificent greenery around it. And yes, my brain connects the cypress with masculinity. I would love to smell this on a guy. Definitely standing out from the crowd.

Solid fragrance. Starts off with a green nuance, slightly spicy, very aromatic. Then you’re settled into a bed of woody, leathery, even lightly floral notes. This fragrance projects nicely for about 2 hours, you’ll get whiffs of this. Sillage pretty heavy on my experiences I find. If i have to guess you’ll be smelled as you pass or before from about 4-6 feet. Lasts over 4 hours strongly then another 4-5 on the spray area. Try not to overspray this one it can be cloying. Just wow! I’m not able to speak of the vintage formulation, but this is a gem in a bottle, the bottle is also shaped like a gem. :) The lemon note is beautiful, along with the cinnamon and woody notes. A man 30+ with taste would appreciate this classic..and as I’m close to 30, this will stand out amongst the millennial peers. Smells mature, but not dated, I guess this is what a timeless classic smells like. If this is an introduction to what the original smells like, then this is pretty darn good. Maybe soon I’ll be in the market for a vintage bottle, but for now I’ll be enjoying my new $7 gem purchased at Marshall’s.

Can it be? Can it be possible that an old school fragrance remains timeless? The answer, yes, yes it can. It’s got an old school vibe to it, but it’s still modern and fresh. To my nose I get leather and lemons. There’s just something very manly and fresh to it. Upon looking for Halston Amber, I grabbed this one instead, as they were out of Halston Amber. I gotta say, I have no regrets here. It reminds me of 80’s colognes, but it’s so well blended it feels modern. On my skin this lasts me quite awhile too. Received some compliments while out in the community too. Now I’m thinking about getting into the Halston cologne house. There is a small amount of polo in here. Obviously it’s nowhere near the same category of polo, but there is a note in here that gives me a less obnoxious vibe to the polo green. 8/10

I like this classic DNA. Starts off spicy and dries down to woody leather. For the price of this, it can’t hurt anyone to pick up a bottle to add to the collection. Here’s the rub though...with all the fragrances at a TJMaxx or similar store (Burberry Touch, Unforgiveable, Coach for Men, Cool Water, etc. etc,), this one for me is the most generic. Of all the bargain DNAs, this one will get the least amount of play. Longevity for me was only about 5/6 hours and projection was mild/moderate. Overall, a decent masculine classic that will allow you to change things up once in awhile.

I am fortunate to tell everyone here on Fragrantica that today; I received a 16 oz demonstration bottle of Halston Z-14. I opened the lid and smelled it. It has lost none of it's scent. Beautiful. Smells just like Tom Ford Italian Cypress. Just beautiful. This bottle was found at an estate sale. These bottles are extremely rare so, I now store it in the dark, out of light in a cool temperature. I own several bottles of z14. If you want to experience Halston with some of it's old dna; the closest thing is on eBay with the Nascar drivers face on the box, Jeff Gordon. This is about as good as you can find it, unless you get a vintage bottle. Halston was first produced as Halston Fragrances, then French Fragrances, then EA (Elizabeth Arden) Fragrances. EA Fragrances often change about everything they touch, along with Puig in Spain. Also, Vendetta Pour Homme is extremely close if not a clone of Halston Z-14. The 2018-present bottles last less than one hour. It's nothing more than a lemon scent with cinnamon. It's really sad. I think they feel that it's a bygone era, and so, it's on its way out. I expect EA to discontinue Halston Z-14 in a few years. Sad... UPDATE, I just acquired yet another 3.9oz bottle of Halston Z-14 with the removable pump action sprayer. OMG!!! So beautiful, so Woody, so much Oakmoss, Cypress bomb, dried red grapes, a tanginess and zesty scent thats effervescent, its that hard to describe. If I had millions of dollars; I'd buy this brand, re-formulate it back to the original formula and watch sales go right through the roof! No other scent is like the old formula. ***If you can get the old bottles from Halston Colognes or French Fragrances, get them no matter what the cost. I'm telling you; it's just so hypnotic, so incrediblely sexy & luxurious, it ain't even funny. I got a recent bottle by EA Fragrances, 6LA code on bottom which is from 2006 or 2016. No way is it 2016 because EA would never have that dark juice! It was budgeted out awhile ago. So, it has to be a 2006: codes are repeated every 10 years. Anyway, Beautiful smell, last long; OMG, NUCLEAR. I made the mistake of 4 sprays. Never again!!! This is one and done. No joke. It has oakmoss and treemoss.

I don't know what it used to be years ago. I'll tell you what it's all about NOW, as I got a bottle for a present on 2018. This is Cola with spice, stays close to the skin, comforting and lovely while clearly isn't made to impress anyone. NOT for making a good impression since is doesn't project at all - so keep that in mind. No one will know you're wearing anything other than those touching or hugging you. Imagine the essence of a COLA drink, Maybe the Cola syrup that comes with a club soda, add some spicy trees tone that isn't green, and a hint of candy and some cinnamon, and that's what you'll get. Forget the notes listed, maybe they were relevant in the 1970's. I can't say it's masculine, I can't say it's feminine, it's beyond gender, a lovely smell, a cute smell to have around the kitchen or on your blanket after a shower on a hot summer night. I can't say it's sexy nor am I too sure the current formula is what anyone wish to smell like. It's also has a very faint note that bares some resemblance to a human body, not a kinki b.o, but that cinnamon oriental almost cumin tone. With no projection, and a formula that prolly turned into something no one actually aimed for, (But is, still lovely I have to admit) it's an interesting scent to use around the house, for yourself, or for meeting someone you already know. by far not a first date or a job interview scent. Nor a sexy scent. Some scents are lovely original and interesting but they just aren't the best idea for a fragrance. This is one of them. A sweet cola and spice portion that develops into cumin. Sounds amazing but I wouldn't want to be it or smell like it. While being definitely light years off the current trends map in fragrances, it is, yet none offensive. Just like Coca Cola or cinnamon tea aren't provocative. It's a cute quiet scent. Lovely but somehow just not the best idea for a fragrance.

It is definitely not what I expected (which I guess is the beauty of a blind buy) but I still can't decide if I love it or hate it. First spritz, I hated it. It's sat on my wrist for about 30 min now and it's growing on me. It's definitely masculine, and I usually prefer softer, more powdery clean scents that could easily be unisex. I love anything with patchouli and I really like John Varvatos for its leathery/tobacco smell so I figured I'd like this, but it just smells a little bit cheap to me. Gonna see what I partner thinks of it and go from there. Probably won't wear it much.

The finest I have ever owned, I cipher. Rigorously utilized in the course of winter. A bewildering fougère for masculinity. A classic aromatic of the Punk rock era, initially convening a fresh citrus and sherbet lemon aperture; a modest and rapid drydown to a serene cypress incense balanced with leather, amber and cedarwood. Based with violet Coca-Cola. Conjures up images of an ancestor's 1979 wardrobe; dark and dusty, housing a bouquet of accustomed classic male fougères. Economical yet superlative.

as fan of old school fragrances for men, Halston Z14 was one of my best loved fragrances and I say "it was" as now unfortunately the re-formulation has damaged this piece of art beyond repair; as many of the fragrances I normally wear (Aramis, Quorum, Givenchy Gentleman, Polo green, Bogart) this cologne/aftershave has suffered the infamous attack of international control and some of the notes have been taken out of its original formula and those that still remain cannot give the same image and presentation this powerful fragrance had in the past, it's a crime as this fragrance was so great and powerful you needed just 2 to 3 sprays and the scent was strong enough to keep all heads turning even after 6 hours of wearing it, now it's just a composition of lemon juice and cinnamon that gives a poor picture of its past of power and greatness.

I have ordered a vintage Z-14 from Sweden. The history of vintage formulations is still confusing. The bottle I ordered is made in France, and is an EDT, very rare I think the oldest vintage edt bottles are the only ones worth having. A. rich classic masterpiece. Tom Ford "London" has a similar vib, dark, with buttery indolic Jasmine. With the oldest vintage Z-14 you pick out the gardinia, it's great. There are still bottles available from eBay sellers in Sweden. They are 115 ml, edt, and made in France, about $70.

What a masterpiece. Halston's 'Z-14' is one of those department and drug store fragrances that I mistakenly passed over for many years. It is everywhere, for great prices and I was ignorant for far too long. The first whiff initially is garden greens, freshly cut vegetables, basil, spices, and broiled lemons. It is extremely strong, projects like a beast, and it smells unbelievably amazing. A touch of leather and cedar comes in as it dries down, laced with a dash of cinnamon and it becomes even more complex. For the first few hours it has massive projection and the sillage is very strong. After this stage it settles down and releases a complex blend of herbal notes and aromas that continue to project and linger everywhere you go all day long. A beautiful base of musk, patchouli, citrus and herbal greens carry on for a long time. Longevity is about eight hours for me with a liberal application of ten sprays to the neck, chest, shoulders and wrists. For an Eau de Cologne concentration, the performance is excellent and outshines most modern Eau de Toilette's and even Eau de Parfum's. All in all, this is a powerhouse classic. A unique masculine cologne for a mature man that smells amazing, gets tons of compliments, is an unbeatable value and available everywhere but is often overlooked. An essential part of my collection now.

Z-14 is one of the best men's scents ever. It smells like a really cute guy wearing his sister's Aliage and chewing Big Red cinnamon gum. Clean but spicey. Woody but not hamster cage or oud. Z-14 just gets it right. Smells excellent on my husband.

I own the old formula which I can compare to Allure Homme Sport Cologne, although this fragrance is more appropriate for fall. I'm not a fan of a lot of the 70's fragrances because some contain too much musk. In fact, Musk for Men was the most popular fragrance during the 1970's. I like Halston Z-14 because of the memories, and it has sentimental value to me. Finally, it wasn't overloaded with musk. Fast forward to earlier this week when I visited TJ Maxx. WOW, Halston has reformulated this fragrance to an even better fragrance which cinnamon dominates. I know there are a lot of complaints in the fragrance community, but for me it's a very welcome addition, and makes this fragrance appropriate for today. Many other fragrances have made this transition, and for me I can honestly say that I haven't found one that has disappointed me. Anyway, here are my thoughts in video form. youtu.be/Rw6PKhljARE ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Just let that initial burst of lemon, dash of lime, evap for a bit and the rest comes out, a classic. There is a woodsy energy there. For the price and reputation, don't think twice about adding this to your collection. I have to say, a great backyard after work scent.

This was a blind buy for me together with another four fragrances from 1970'ish and one from the 1930's, all from a reputable supplier. I obviously either bought a new formulation or a dud. I say this because having now read the reviews on Z14 I am unable to reconcile what has been said with my purchase of the EdC. I recognize none of the notes mentioned and get an overwhelming wet, paper pulp scent from start to finish except that it tones down a little as time passes. Very disappointed to be honest. It is not unpleasant, just not inspiring in the least. Perhaps I should seek out a vintage bottle to see why there are so very many positive comments. Update October 2019 - I have come to really enjoy wearing this scent. Perhaps one to persevere with or allow to age a little from first opening. The papery note is still there for me but no longer disappointing.

I will be the first to admit, my memory is not how it used to be. Therefore all I can say is that the "Vintage Z-14" back in the day was the "Cats Tail" it next to "Polo Green" was pure male sensuality. I mean the women were all over it and some not expected guys as well. TMI, sorry. Anyways the new version for a fact I know is not what the old once was, however with time it has grown on me to the point that I take off the cap to smell it several times per day. Yes the citrus is a lemon type smell, a plesantvery tolerable lemon smell not a gagging type of lemon smell and then there are notes, medium notes of spice that kind of warms up to me as it stays on my skin. Mind you I have always thought that what I smell is totally different to what someone else might think of a fragrance and how it smells. All I can say is for those wishing to purchase the newer scent of Z-14, "Do It", allow time to warm up to the fragrance, I couldn't stand the smell when I first bought the re-form, but now, And I mean this very minute I can't wait until Fall arrives here in the Midwest. The new re-form will grow on you in a very good way. Like I said the Lemon dominates the frag but then you get your notes of fresh spice which seems to keep morphing into different types and levels of spice. To me there is nothing offensive with this frag. I feel it can be comfortably worn in the office, or any other setting. Beware, when applying it, it to me seemed that I didn't spray enough where I later found that I sprayed too much. For me one direct spray on the chest / neck, and a light one on the upper back / neck. The lasting power of this is as above in the chart long lasting, but definitely something that doesn't haunt you where you wish you would have made a different decision of a particular scent for that day. I like it but as stated compared to the original there is no comparison. Just to say again this is only my opinion, I have grown to really like it and will continue to wear it. Thanks for reading.

How to make faux Z-14: Decant 10ml EA version and add oakmoss absolut (3 drops), real bergamot (not the bergaptene-free variety, 7 drops), labdanum (2 drops) and Suederal (trace amount!). Are these extra ingredients expensive? You betcha! Luxury often has a price.

To me this (the original 1970's iteration) is what Tom Ford was paying homage to with his Italian Cypress. The reformulation is a "LOW RES PROXY" version of the original and for that matter TF Italian Cypress. But since IC has been discontinued and the original Z-14 is lost in the sands of time...the new formulation is as close as we will get, today. The resolution is crude, considering the lower quality ingredients and adjustments for allergenes. But it is still a unique, classy, masculine, timeless scent. There is nothing else quite like it on the market today. With the reformulation, your skin type plays a major factor in how well it works for you. It seems the cheaper ingredients work with far more limited skin types. Fortunately on my skin it smells amazing and I get tons of compliments with it. Hope it's the same for you. ORIGINAL 1970's vintage Z-14: 10/10 Current Reformulation: 8/10 but factoring in the price, this is a steal! It is very masculine, unique and classy. Don't expect it to smell like what is trending today (but also not dated). If you want to make a subtle (good smelling statement) and a nod back to a different era of cool...this is the frag. It doesn't smell 70's, it just smells good. Also, like Tom Ford's frags it tends to work with a more manly/mature body chemistry. I'd recommend 25-30+. If you can't afford the discontinued Tom Ford Italian Cypress, or find a vintage bottle of this. Get the reformulation. Don't believe the "hate". No it's not as good as the original (for that get TF IC), or blended as well, with high quality ingredients. But it still smells niche, expensive and amazing. Perfect fall/winter fragrance. I hope they never discontinue it. Oh, and FYI I wasn't around in the 70's...too young for that. So I'm judging the frag off my experiences of frags today...including those of Tom Ford (of which I'm a huge fan).

I recently bought a bottle of the ORIGINAL formula off of Ebay. Man, was I shocked. Never smelled anything like it and it was soooo good! I mean for real. This stuff would be classified as "niche" today by Jeremy Fragrance himself. The smell is exquisite, luxurious, fabulous, incredible. No, I am not looking to resell it either. That said, I have yet to wear it. But I have noticed that there are 3 distinct manufacturers; Halston, French Fragrances and EA Fragrance(Elizabeth Arden). Halston Fragrances Inc starts out with an incredible musky, amber, incense vanilla with a light-powdery residue. The dry-down is far far better almost like a cognac that dried on a glass, exceptional smell. I am only telling you the scent coming from the used bottle that I have and its still 96% full of a 3.9oz bottle. The juice is darker which may be due to the bottle, not sure. It has a twist spray and the sprayer comes out; pump spray action. 502A is the 4-digit batch code. I have ordered a 2.5oz bottle of the French Frag, but it has not yet arrived. It will be interesting to see if there's any similarities. I doubt it! Now the EA Fragrance is very different. It's lighter in color and smell, but it still smells very good. Batch code is 7KR4 I believe. It smells of cinnamon-heavy, some vanilla and is a little reminiscent of the original, but not at all the same. My guess is that when Halston left his company, the vultures came in and budgeted the place and quality, right out of the bottle. you know how "corporate" works. Anyway, I highly recommend buying a bottle. It still smells good and is worth the money. The EA Frag can be found at almost ant TJ Maxx, but you have to be on the lookout for it! Happy scenting...

I have noticed the cinnamon in my bottle (produced 2014) has mellowed out a good bit in the 1.5 years (ish) since I bought it. The heavy cinnamon wasn't an issue with me, but I think the juice smells far better now that it did when purchased.

Classic citrus fougere powerhouse. I was expecting more woods and spices but they're pretty subtle here. This is more of a citrus over a complex, somewhat soapy base. Very classic eau de cologne in structure, with it's refreshing citrus and herbs, plus some elegance from the chypre foundation. A solid, confident, manly fragrance... way too manly for a woman to carry off, unfortunately. It's a really great fragrance though, and a favorite for good reason. Sexy, confident man.

What can I say? loved it then and love it now. a great scent with a nice, masculine drydown full of woods and spice. The cinnamon CAN be a little overpowering, but only if you put your nose right up to the scent. in the sillage, it is just right. The only issue I have with the newer version is that it doesn't seem to last as long on me. My memory could be fading, but I remember this as being a beast in sillage and longevity. Not so much now.

Initial note is familiar, reminiscent to Boucheron pour Homme for about 5-10 minutes. Then cinnamon note takes over, still with the trails of citrus at the background...minutes more harmony of leather, amber and woody notes, really uplifting your mood. It is not harsh, even though a bit loud at the opening. Got compliments from my office colleagues, minus only...it is hard to find it here.

You could be forgiven for dismissing this as an inferior, "cheap" fragrance for its abundance on the shelves at Marshall's. You could also be forgiven for forgetting - or not even knowing about - this 1970's classic whose glory days are decades behind. However, you'd be remiss for not risking a $12 blind buy and missing out on the absolute divinity of this one - and, yes, I'm talking about the current reformulation. It's smoother now; less heavy than its hairy-chested ancestor. To my nose, it smells like a night-time cousin of Dior's Eau Sauvage. Yes, it's that good. Tehcnically, it's a cologne, but Halston found a way to make this cologne shine like an EDP. I once heard a rabbi claim that God will hold us accountable for the joys we intentionally bypass in this life. For me, Z-14 is one of those joys, and I plan to enjoy as much of it as I possibly can :)

Halston is clearly a less well-known name in the UK, but alas the joys of these boards is easy to hunt out scents that you've never heard of. Z-14 is one such scent, as is the designer house of Halston. Not wanting another cypress/chypre, I reluctantly tried the current version. Let's just say the connections to big red gum are totally justified. Cinnamon in a bottle. You might be forgiven for wanting to dust your rice pudding with it! Vintage on the other hand, even something I would class as semi-vintage, is clearly on another level. Woody, resinous, potent and long-lasting (and yes, with some cinnamon in there - but not a truck load), this is another one of those scents that any chypre lover should vie to try at least once in their life time. It’s hard to believe that this scent is so affordable. Two sprays are enough to last a whole working day. Projection is quite strong. Wearers should expect their clothes to smell of the mossy accord for days later.

Bought a old school mini frag gift set. Z 14 was one of 4 others. My dad wore this. I wore this as a kid not even knowing i was wearing a masterpiece. Its old school but not dated at all. I just found a bottle for $20. It smells like it should cost $200. Tom Ford could easily rebottle this as a private blend
